Northern Skies: The Aurora Borealis

Sorry I've been MIA lately, but I've been beyond the reach of internet, in a tiny village called Tasiujaq, which is even further up north than I was last week (if you can imagine that!). The tiny Inuit village was GORGEOUS and I have so many beautiful photos to share with you..... but for now here are a few pictures I took of the incredible Northern Lights.

(these two Inuit teenage girls desperately wanted to pose for the picture, so they stood as still as statues for my 30-second exposure)

The aurora borealis was absolutely magnificent! Dreamy and hauntingly beautiful. I watched them dance across the icy night sky for hours.
Have you ever seen them?

  13. That's so awesome! I always wanted to see the aurora borealis. When I first moved here, I thought I might be able to see the australis. We are SO far south. They call it the end of the world here. But, alas, we're not far enough south. You lucky girl, gettin' fabulous pictures from your adventures!

  19. These photos are absolutely beautiful. I took pictures of the northern lights in Alaska a few years ago, but they didn't come out as vibrant as yours! What's your trick?

Seeing them was one of the most magical moments of my life... and I think it's when I knew I had fallen in love with someone.

  21. Mary,
I'm not sure if you used a tripod when you took your photos, but I think it's necessary. I used a 30 second exposure & a wide open aperture.

Oh and how lovely to fall in love under the aurora.... so romantic!
